Compressor 4.1 Blank Window

Compressor 4.1 Blank Window
Mavericks 10.9.1
Go to Guest User and Compressor Opens as normal so this is specific to my User Admin Account.

I get the
Current Active Completed window
File / Add File is greyed out along with the other File menu options
in
View / Settings and Locations are selectable but nothing happens.

I searched through the User Library and tossed all related Preferences I can find.
Rebooted
Restarted Compressor
No Change

Again this is User specific since Guest User functions normally.
Perhaps I missed a Preference I should have trashed but or there's a user specific Cache or Temp file I'm missing.

Similar problem. I first trashed preferences. No change. Then used FCS Remover to uninstall. Reinstalled and now I think it works – except that I can't enable additional instances for a cluster; it's complete;y greyed out in Advanced tab. Also, I don't know where they stuck Qmaster this time. (I don't find an embedded app folder in package contents.

You have to be on a network and Compressor has to see other Compressors out there to have more than 1 instance allowed on your machine.

Qmaster is gone, it is all done way more easily in the Preferences now.

Look at page 11 of this white paper.

Thanks; I had seen that.

What I was trying to do is as follows from C 4.1 Help:

You can increase the processing power of a single computer, and thus reduce the time it takes to process batches, by enabling one or more additional instances of the Compressor application.

Hide
Enable instances of Compressor
Choose Compressor > Preferences (or press Command-Comma).

Click Advanced.

Select the “Enable additional Compressor instances” checkbox, then choose a number of instances from the pop-up menu.

This is unavailable (greyed out) for me in the Advanced tab in Preferences.

Ben there's two of us with issues.
15:" 2011 MacBooPro (not Retina).
Again for me it's User specific as Guest User looks and works fine.
Despite moving all Prefs manually and then doing the same with FCS Remover.
I've got nothing but the blank
Current Active Completed window.
Show/Hide on the right does NOTHING.
Selecting View/Settings or View/Locations does NOTHING
File menu options are all greyed.

Wow, that's a weird one. Have you tried trashing the layout files here? ~/Library/Application Support/Compressor/Layouts

Thanks!

Trashed that.

For good measure I also trashed:
Command Sets
History
Settings
Storage

That fixed it.
I guess those are things that FCS Remover doesn't remove.

Major Thanks!

The instances is dependent upon what your hardware can handle. Apple should be updating that online help doc soon.

Don't think FCS Remover has been updated for Compressor 4.1.

BTW as per Russ's issue with instances.
I have Quad i7 Sandy Bridge and 10GB RAM. When enabled in Compressor Preferences I can only create 1 Instance. Maybe I'm just missing a setting. I haven't checked that closely. I'd think I should be able to create at least 4 instances though.

Just confirmed that if the instances option is grayed out, that hardware will only support 1 single instance. Not a bug.

There is some confusion about this, and you guys are not seeing bugs. Apple should be update the online help doc to clarify this soon.

Well with Quad i7 Sandy Bridge and 10GB of RAM (assuming 2 GB of ram per instance) I should have 4 instances.

The number of instances available in the pop-up menu changes automatically based on the amount or RAM and number of CPU cores in your computer

4 cores and 10GB shouldn't be 1 instance.

Something's up.

Ben, may not be a "bug" but if there's a limit it's not explained.
This would be that 4 Core Sandy Bridge and 10GB of RAM doesn't earn a 2nd instance.
They give no explanation as to what the thresholds are.

Bug, maybe not. Bad documentation, yes IMHO.

More Compressor stuff

bug: Click on "add output" and watch the core dump in a console window.

I copied the HD 720p setting and changed to High Profile w/CABAC entropy only to watch the QT settings change to single pass. When I edit the settings for multi-pass the entropy mode switch back to CAVLC. Seems you cant have both.

I'm having the same issue with the number of instances. 2013 iMac 3.5 i7, 32gb ram and the GTX 780M. Only 1 instance and distributed processing with a 2012 iMac i7 just shows up as unavailable. If neither of these will work, then I'm assuming only the new Mac Pro will.

I've got them both successfully encoding individually and that's about it.
