Mavericks/FCPX Hell

Mavericks/FCPX Hell was created by Apollo85
Hey all, I'll take any help I can get here.

1 month before Mavs came out, my computer was having kernel panics while using FCPX. Took it to repairs, they said everything was fine, reinstall FCP and Lion.

I decided to wait it out hoping Mavericks would solve all of this. Only made things worse it seems. I can't work a half hour into Final Cut without the program crashing, shutting down, then getting a grey screen that says "There's been a problem. The computer is restarting." I've also had my computer log me out to the log-in screen while using FCPX. Weird...

Is it buggy Mavericks? Should I reinstall the software and FCP? Let me note that I'm working off an external drive that is powered off my USB port.

Thanks everyone.

Ouch. Those are Kernal panics. Not good. In my experience those are typically that is related to RAM or a video card issue.

What machine do you have? Can you give a list of any external devices?

I'm using a 2009 Macbook Pro. I use a Seagate 500 gb portable drive along with a Lacie external. I work off both of those in FCPX.

I'm hanging on that recent trip to the repair shop that it's not RAM or video card related. Guy said everything looked fine hardware wise.

I'm hoping it's just Mavericks BS or I need to reinstall FCPX.

Humm. Bummer. Try this:

support.apple.com/kb/TS3893?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

You can probably skip to #7. Then see about the rest.

Yikes. That's not normal.

My first instinct would be hardware-related, too. Apple have a page about troubleshooting kernel panics which looks useful - it's certainly worth installing Mavericks on an external drive and booting from that to rule out software/install issues.

BTW. Are you able to easily reproduce this kernel panic?

A kernel panic is when it goes grey as says "There's been a problem. The computer is restarting."

A regular old error is different.

Do you have ANY third party plugins?

Other than the hard drive's I use while editing, no there's no other 3rd party plug-ins.

Update:

I erased the disk, and reinstalled Mavericks. Quick sidenote, computer as a whole is running MUCH better than after the first Mavs download.

I was working smoothly in FCPX until it kernel panicked. When I got back to the desktop, I got the "corrupt event manager" warning. Perhaps there's some corrupt footage on my hard drive? And so the plot thickens!

I too want to wipe my drive & reinstall Mavericks from an external, but haven't yet been able to get it to boot from one. That's after the bandwidth taxing process of downloading Mavericks 3 times!

I'm on Mavericks now with a MacbookPro that could do with a fresh start, there are some odd issues. But my other machine had a clean install, on an almost virgin drive, & it's WAY superior in everything it does. The update from Lion to Mavericks is insufficient if you have a cluttered drive with years of updates. Unfortunately the App store (don't even get me started), gives the user virtually no control of where the downloaded file goes or what you can do with it. Not overjoyed.

Until I get this all sorted out, I don't even want to install FCPX...

When you download mavericks, it adds an app in your applications folder "install osx mavericks". Before you install, quit the installer and drag this file to an external drive. There is a Macworld tutorial about creating a boot thumb drive and it's really easy (just don't remember the terminal command). But either way, you'll have a copy of the installer without needed to download it again.

Back to the OP, try running digital rebellions pro maintenance tools on your events and projects to find any corrupt clips. Also make sure you have the latest cuda and driver updates for your machine.

Also, what happens if you edit off your internal drive. I used to get kernel panics all the time with an external hard drive that was going bad.

I have never had a kernel panic that wasn't hardware related.

As a test try using the Mac without the external drive. Just copy some media to your local drive and disconnect the Lacie.
See if it panics. If it doesn't try a different cable to the Lacie, if it comes back get a new external drive.

If it keeps crashing without the drive plugged in try swapping out the ram.

Me too.

Just so you know I have Mavericks on my 2012 iMac 27", as well as a 2007 MacBook Pro. Running FCPX just fine getting lots of work done. My suspicion is that something is up with your hardware. If you have an Apple store nearby I would bring in your machine and let them take peek at the logs, also try to get the error to happen in front of them. Since you wiped your machine, perhaps bring in the external drive with your projects plug it into one of their new Macs and see if you can reproduce the problem.

FCPX pushes a machine harder than any App I know of. So if you machine has an issue FCPX will reveal it.

Be persistent. Their hardware diagnosis is not perfect, intermittent problems are really hard to find.

i also had a kernel panic issue with fcpx then i found out it was the WD harddrive that was connected via thunderbolt on my apple external monitor. i wrote the apple team and they really were nice and absolutely helped me find the problem. u can reach the fcpx support here: www.apple.com/feedback/finalcutpro.html

Update #2:

Hey all,

Earlier today I took the computer to an authorized Apple repair store in downtown Philly. The tech guy, who was incredibly helpful, did say the kernel panic reports looked bad, possible failing logic board. However, he did suggest to switch my energy saver from Better Battery Life to Higher Performance. This entire time I've been using the lower quality videocard in my 2009 MBP.

When I got back from the store, I opened up FCPX, and worked 35 minutes (to be exact) straight with videowork in the program. In those 35 minutes, FCPX worked beautifully. Didn't have any kernel panics, crashes, log outs etc.

I'm gonna do more testing in the morning before I go to the genius bar meeting I have scheduled. Am I out of the woods? Probably not. :) But that was an encouraging 35 minutes!
