I've experienced slowdowns caused by font conflicts.
Check your Font Book application and make sure there's no corrupted fonts or duplicates.
This may help.

This is probably why. Your internal drive is probably 5400rpm. Never use the internal drive unless it's SSD, even then you should still use an external drive since you risk losing data if working with the same drive your OS is on.

Sadly I think the problem is mostly the fact that you have minimum spec video card,RAM and using the internal drive. Could you try moving the project to an external drive to see if it makes any difference?
Also what size and frame rate are you working with

Sean Lander - Editing since 1982 - AVID 1991 - FCP 1999 - FCPX 2011
Sorry I failed to notice the mention of proxy files. To me I would checking other installed software that might be causing the lag. Is it a fairly clean system? Which OS?

1st, Optimizing the files on Import would help performance, but they will also require more drive space.
You have either a Firewire or Thunderbolt port, depending on when you purchased your MBP. Those are the drives to get, not USB.
The 13" model doesn't have the best GPU for video work. It is like the Air, FCP X will run on it, just not very efficiently.
Get an external (non-USB) drive for your Events and Projects. If possible, boost it to 16GB RAM. That is about all you can do, and it will improve performance.
If you buy a new Mac laptop, you need to go with the 15" model, for a GPU that has more power. FCP X and Motion 5 are GPU heavy now.

Using thunderbolt (if you do have a thunderbolt port on your macbook) makes a huge difference indeed. We love using the G-Raid 8TB set up as a raid system. You get cheaper ones, too. Why don't you order one, check out the difference and return it in case it doesn't suit your needs?

I have had FCPX slow down if I have a lot of apps running... oddly MS word or open office seems to slow it down more so than others...
