Is there a 'ripple mode' in FCPX that works the same as in other NLE's?

Hi everyone,

I've been using FCPX for a few months and am absolutely loving it. I don't think I can ever go back to NOT using a magnetic timeline :)

I have a question.

Is there a ripple mode in FCPX which is the same as in some other NLEs?

By this I mean, can I have say 20 clips on the main storyline and say grab clip number 10 and move this to the right leaving behind a gap clip while ALSO ripple-moving clips 11-20 upstream to the right as well??

If I select the position tool, it will move clip number 10 and leave behind a gap but it won't move any other clips. Thats fair enough.

The only way I can think of to do what I want is to actually select the position tool and highlight clips 10-20 and move them to the right as a group.. This will do exactly what I want..

But for educational purposes I'm wanting to know if there is an actual MODE that I can use to do such a ripple..

I think you could insert a gap clip in front of clip number ten. Then just extend that gap clip to your liking. A lot easier than having to select clips 10-20, though not exactly what you asked for. Hope it helps.

Lift clip ten out of the primary storyline (cmd+opt+up-arrow), leaving it connected to a gap clip on the primary. Then reposition clip ten.

I can't think of a way of doing it as a single operation, but the above isn't exactly a workaround either.

you could trim the tail of clip 9 1 frame, select the outgoing edit of the 1f gap clip this creates and extend it as far as needed, but as overturf says, just adding gap between 9 & 10 would do it with one keystroke. Well, not counting readjusting the gap length. :-)

I actually did this on a project this several times just this morning. I concur that the best way to accomplish it is to insert a gap and then adjust the duration of the Gap.

This is actually quite elegant as long as you are thinking about your story rather than "right or left". i.e instead of "I want to move a bunch of clips to the right", but "I want something else in my story to show before these clips". Thusly you could add a gap.

You can highlight clip 10 to 20 and use Position Tool to move them to the right or like another poster mentioned, insert a Gap then trim to size.
