Import Fail While Live Recording with Canon HV30

I've just made the switch from iMovie 11. I am attempting to record and import at the same time into an event on Final Cut Pro X. The camera is connected to my Macbook Pro. Final Cut Pro X>File>Import>Media produces the desired result as far as the Canon HV30 appears as a camera found. When I click on >Import I am presented with the add to existing or create a new event, I have tried both options. There is a brief indication that there is importing going on only because the rectagular box says as much but within 2 or 3 seconds the message says, "Camera Not Controllable."

and there I am stuck.

Regards,

John
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.2)

FCP X needs to read SMTE timecode from the tape, but what that error message is telling you is that FCP X isn't getting any TC. Are you connected via Firewire? I'm not familiar with that camera.

Apple even lists the Canon HV30 amongst the compatible cameras for FCPX.

As a test I'd suggest using a prerecorded HDV tape (DV tape with HDV recording) play that back and see if FCPX can capture it.

Yes I am connected via firewire. I can connect and import in anything other than HD mode. I can only connect in HD modes - I just learned though that it will import via tape. The Canon HV30 is on the approved list.

I'm going to guess by throwing a tape in there and going into record, the data may be coming off the playhead post the record head and it's sending additional data that helps with handling the GOP based codec being send.

Let the tape run a few seconds before hitting the import button. It may be catching mid GOP or something. I dunno, it should capture just fine.

Be sure all other FW devices are powered off and/or disconnected.

To import from a HDV camera in FCPX I believe you have to go to > File > Import from Camera, NOT > File > Import > Media.

I recently captured an old HDV tape from a Canon XLH1, and that worked for me without any issue.

As of 10.0.6 there is only one import window.
Final Cut Pro X: The New Import Options (10.0.6)

Tape capture from the HV30 (my home cam) works perfectly in FCP X (even better than before) in both DV and HDV. For live streaming you should be able to go via HDMi or Component into a capture device.

If I'm not too mistaken, the FW port only gives a signal out when the camera is set to PLAY.

Can you wait until tomorrow? I'll dig out cam and give it a try.

I have the same camera and the same issues. My solution is actually to capture in iMovie.

And then complete an enhancement request for fcp. ;)

Then you got something wrong with your camera settings.

I should clarify. I can't get FCP X to live capture with a HV30 via Firewire, i.e. something that is not already recorded on the tape. Apparently FCP X wants timecode. It will start to import but then report that the camera is not controllable:

iMovie on the other hand does allow this.

Correct. The only cameras it will live record from are the iSight cameras built into iMacs, laptops and Apple Monitors.

My bad. Sorry, I thought you meant capture from tape.

No, live capture via FW doesn't work.

Thank you everyone for your input. So to conclude the thread it appears that FCProX will not permit a direct record as I was able to do in iMovie11. So I am to record to tape and then import by FireWire.

Or use iMovie or some other app that will record live.

My question is, what is your purpose for recording live?

Save on tapes in part. Also I end up doing a bajillion takes and when I go direct I type which take to track what I'm doing. Not sure but don't the tapes have their limitations regarding retaking?

OK, so what does capturing "live" give you that tape doesn't?
I'm very confused.

Live recording gives you the full 1920, instead of 1440, coming from the sensor and you forgo the HDV compression. I have yet to see a discernible difference though.
