I was impressed by the breathlessness of TV-show THE BEAR - but lately was surprised by this best-practice-example of multicam editing:

WOW!! :)

It surprises me when editors still insist on using that swoosh sound effect on whip pans or transitions or flying titles when they should have abandoned that cliche' when advancing beyond grade school film class.

Can we please finally pound a wooden stake though the dark heart that is this juvenile and overused gimmick? I'd like to hear a justification from anyone who does this other than 'viewers expect it and I don't want them to be crest fallen if I leave it behind.'

A nice edit but editor cluttered things up by 'selling (editing) past the close" by returning to the edit and have the intern insert swooshes everywhere.

Expanding on my opinion on superfluous Fx...

Does your ‘swoosh’ enhance the viewing experience or is it crucial to advancing the story? The imperical test being… Is it visible with Closed Captioning turned on? To wit:

[wind howling through the overhead palm fronds]
[engine revving up then stalling out]
[sound ot tires spinning on a loose gravel road]
[distant fire engine siren getting nearer]
[swoosh]

I mean, you wouldn’t deny the deaf the benefit of knowing about the engine or the gravel road or the siren so clearly they need to be made aware of the emphasis on a transition or hyper zoom. If it’s not included in the SRT for all the world to see (and then laugh at) it shouldn’t be included in the cut.

I recall some slow talking chap narrating a promotional video. Every time he clicked to make an adjustment or move a slider he inserted a rather loud 12db CLICK effect that drove me from watching it further. Think of the time he spent seeding the things throughout the video and timing them just right as if anybody needed reminding every 3 seconds what a mouse click sounds like.

(Here endeth my rant for the day.)

This was really nicely done. Split screens are fun to play with, and worth experimenting with. Also handy if you need to repurpose to portrait — just move the frames around.
