Get rushes into the cloud instantly for viewing using Frame.io's new Camera to Cloud service.

Today Frame.io announced a new service, Camera to Cloud, a workflow that allows the uploading and streaming of rushes from set to anywhere in the world. This comes at a great time when productions working under Covid restrictions have to limit the numbers of crew on set.

The new 'C2C' service (which is free to existing Frame.io account holders), was announced during a presentation from Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. A good location as the service is targeted at film production.

“Frame.io C2C is disruptive technology that changes the traditionally linear filmmaking process, allowing both on-set production and remote post-production teams to work together at the same time,” said Michael Cioni, Global SVP of Innovation at Frame.io. “This level of collaboration brings creative teams together and allows them to work faster and more collaboratively than ever before.”

Instead of the traditional workflow of a DIT gathering all the footage during the day and then transcoding dailies for everyone to watch, Frame.io's C2C workflow means that it can all happen in real-time.

You'll still need a DIT for looking after the originals, but with the rushes being able to be viewed remotely, it opens up new workflow and production advantages.

  • Instant off-set access to what is being filmed, from any location and any device (iPhone, iPad, etc.), as it’s being filmed.
  • More time and budget for creativity eliminating typical turnaround times for feedback and editing.
  • Enabling a hybrid or fully remote workforce, giving film sets access to the world’s best talent regardless of their location

“In today’s socially distanced world—where remote work has become the norm and the number of people on-set is limited—Frame.io C2C is a game changer,” said Emery Wells, CEO of Frame.io. “Camera to Cloud gives film, television, and commercial productions a seamless new way for creative teams to do their best work, no matter where they are.”

So what do you need to get C2C working through Frame.io?

At the moment, you'll need some custom Frame.io certified hardware to connect to your Arri, Red or Sony camera.

For the picture, A Teradek CUBE 655 encoder delivers live streams and camera proxy files directly into Frame.io. The latest 888 and Scorpio recorders from Sound Devices capture and transmit original audio files directly into Frame.io.

Colorfront's Express Dailies integration with Frame.io allows labs to instantly access the video and audio assets to create dailies.

Although the release and the product is squarely targeted at Hollywood and other high-end drama productions, it will be interesting when this technology trickles down to more modest users. One thing that sets Frame.io apart from other online video services is the 'usability' of the GUI. If film producers & directors get used to skimming clips in Frame.io, will they then see the limitations of their existing traditional NLEs? Surely we can't be far away from being able to edit with the dailies in the cloud as well.

Frame.io C2C is in beta, you can apply to join on the website. Live streaming will be available later this year.

I am the Editor-in-Chief of FCP.co and have run the website since its inception ten years ago.

I have also worked as a broadcast and corporate editor for over 30 years, starting on one inch tape, working through many formats, right up to today's NLEs.

Under the name Idustrial Revolution, I have written and sold plugins for Final Cut Pro for 13 years.

I was made a Freeman of Lichfield through The Worshipful Company of Smiths (established 1601). Though I haven't yet tried to herd a flock of sheep through the city centre!

Current Editing

great house giveaway 2020

2020 has been busy, the beginning of the year was finishing off a new property series (cut on FCP) for Channel 4 called The Great House Giveaway. I also designed and built the majority of the graphics as Motion templates. It has been a great success and the shows grabbed more viewers in the 4pm weekday slot than any previous strand. It has been recommissioned by C4 for 60 episodes, including prime-time versions and five themed programmes. The shows have also been nominated for a 2021 BAFTA.

Tour de france 2020
Although both were postponed to later in the year, I worked again on ITV's coverage of the Tour de France and La Vuelta. 2020 was my 25th year of editing the TdF and my 20th year as lead editor. The Tour was the first broadcast show to adopt FCPX working for multiple editors on shared storage.

BBC snooker the crucible

BBC's Snooker has played a big part in my life, I've been editing tournament coverage since 1997. I'm proud to be part of a very creative team that has pioneered many new ideas and workflows that are now industry standard in sports' production. This is currently an Adobe Premiere edit.

amazon kindle BF

Covid cancelled some of the regular corporate events that I edit such as trade shows & events. I was lucky however to edit, from home, on projects for Amazon Kindle, Amazon Black Friday, Mastercard and very proud to have helped local charitable trust Kendall & Wall secure lottery funding.

As for software, my weapon of choice is Final Cut Pro and Motion, but I also have a good knowledge and broadcast credits with Adobe Premiere Pro, MOGRT design and Photoshop.

Plugin Design & Development

I'm the creative force behind Idustrial Revolution, one of the oldest Final Cut Pro plugin developers. It hosts a range of commercial and free plugins on the site. One free plugin was downloaded over a thousand times within 24 hours of release.

I also take on custom work, whether it is adapting an existing plugin for a special use or designing new plugins for clients from scratch. Having a good knowledge of editing allows me to build-in flexibility and more importantly, usability.

Now in its 10th year and 4th redesign, running FCP.co has given me knowledge on how to run a large CMS- you are currently reading my bio from the database! Although it sounds corny, I am pretty well up on social media trends & techniques, especially in the video sector. The recent Covid restrictions has enabled live FCP.co shows online. This involves managing a Zoom Webinar through Restream.io to YouTube and Facebook.

The Future

I'm always open to new ideas and opportunities, so please get in touch at editor (at) fcp.co. I've judged film competitions, presented workflow techniques to international audiences and come up with ideas for TV shows and software programs!

We've been using Teradex units to do live cameras from around downtown back to our studio for quite awhile now. This is very smart integration of Frame.io with that. More for high-end productions, but really nice integration.
