Today Frame.io has announced an update to its popular online video review service. It has also made the beta of their new Transfer app available.

A big day for Frame.io. Not only does the online review service get an update, there's the new Transfer app that's available as a Beta and CEO Emery Wells is going to appear on FCP.co live Show 9!

You can join in the show on Zoom (100 places first come first served) or watch live on YouTube.

But back to the announcement and let's start with Transfer.

This is a completely new app for Mac and Windows. It lets the user transfer large files, folders and even projects. Possibly the best feature is that if there is a disruption mid-transfer, the download will resume once reconnected.

“Transfer was originally slated for release later this year, but as a response to the profound shift in the way we’re working and the tools our customers need immediately, we’re releasing it in beta today,” says states Emery Wells, cofounder and CEO of Frame.io.

This will really help editors who are remote working and need to share footage. No word yet on price to transfer, maybe there will be an allowance per month with plans. We will have to ask Emery!

If you haven't tried Frame.io, it is the slickest and most professional way to get clients to view videos and comment on them. The big bonus is that the comments can then be brought back into FCPX and placed on the timeline as markers.

There's also a very cool Workflow Extension that allows you to sync the FCPX project timeline with the uploaded video. Clicking on the comments in the extension takes the FCPX playhead to exactly the right place. No more spreadsheets of changes with timecode lists.

Version 3.6 brings some new features.

“It’s always exciting to announce new features and updates to Frame.io. But today, we’re facing a world where these updates are not just nice to have, they’re necessary components to keeping our customers’ businesses and livelihoods pushing forward,” states Wells. “Frame.io Transfer, combined with even stronger security, smarter notifications, iOS Offline Mode and more, equips users with a powerful toolset that we hope will make their lives easier.”

Sharing Is Even More Secure & Streamlined

Remote work has brought many new challenges, not the least of which is ensuring that high- value content is shared securely. Enterprise customers can now secure Presentation and Review.

Links using Login-only access, which means that only specified recipients can view Share Links. Recipients will see a list of everything that’s been shared with them in Frame.io’s new Inbox, which offers a clean and focused view that’s especially useful for busy clients or executives.

Realtime & On-demand Security using Watermark ID

Also announced in Frame.io v3.6 is Watermark ID, which provides customers the ultimate layer of visible security. When any viewer presses “Play,” Frame.io completes a realtime, on-demand transcode of the video with their personal identifying information burned into every frame. A two-hour video starts playing back in less than two seconds, providing peace of mind when sending work out for review.

frameio 36 folder sharing

Folder Sharing and New Move/Copy-to Flow

Finally, users can now add folders to Review Links, allowing them to easily organize and share assets across teams or projects. Any changes made to folders after they are shared are dynamically updated in the Review Link. This is especially useful for teams who produce episodic content or programming that relies on a library of media. Frame.io also made it faster, easier, and more intuitive to organize assets with an improved “Move-to” and “Copy-to” flow.

At a Glance

With this update, Frame.io users will now be able to see all the Presentations they’ve shared and access their settings from one organized list. The display shows folder sizes so users can see which are the heaviest projects at a glance, making it easier to optimize projects and storage.

Smarter Notifications Save Users Time

Frame.io v3.6 consolidates notifications made on the same video within short periods of time, grouping them together into one notification. Users can filter by “Read” or “Unread,” see comment previews, and scrub asset thumbnails to easily spot what needs to be reviewed or addressed.

Go Off the Grid with iOS Offline Mode

“Offline Mode” for Frame.io’s iOS apps empowers users to truly work from anywhere. Simply tap a file to make it available offline, then review and leave comments - as soon as the app comes back online, comments are automatically synced to the project.

I am the Editor-in-Chief of FCP.co and have run the website since its inception ten years ago.

I have also worked as a broadcast and corporate editor for over 30 years, starting on one inch tape, working through many formats, right up to today's NLEs.

Under the name Idustrial Revolution, I have written and sold plugins for Final Cut Pro for 13 years.

I was made a Freeman of Lichfield through The Worshipful Company of Smiths (established 1601). Though I haven't yet tried to herd a flock of sheep through the city centre!

Current Editing

great house giveaway 2020

2020 has been busy, the beginning of the year was finishing off a new property series (cut on FCP) for Channel 4 called The Great House Giveaway. I also designed and built the majority of the graphics as Motion templates. It has been a great success and the shows grabbed more viewers in the 4pm weekday slot than any previous strand. It has been recommissioned by C4 for 60 episodes, including prime-time versions and five themed programmes. The shows have also been nominated for a 2021 BAFTA.

Tour de france 2020
Although both were postponed to later in the year, I worked again on ITV's coverage of the Tour de France and La Vuelta. 2020 was my 25th year of editing the TdF and my 20th year as lead editor. The Tour was the first broadcast show to adopt FCPX working for multiple editors on shared storage.

BBC snooker the crucible

BBC's Snooker has played a big part in my life, I've been editing tournament coverage since 1997. I'm proud to be part of a very creative team that has pioneered many new ideas and workflows that are now industry standard in sports' production. This is currently an Adobe Premiere edit.

amazon kindle BF

Covid cancelled some of the regular corporate events that I edit such as trade shows & events. I was lucky however to edit, from home, on projects for Amazon Kindle, Amazon Black Friday, Mastercard and very proud to have helped local charitable trust Kendall & Wall secure lottery funding.

As for software, my weapon of choice is Final Cut Pro and Motion, but I also have a good knowledge and broadcast credits with Adobe Premiere Pro, MOGRT design and Photoshop.

Plugin Design & Development

I'm the creative force behind Idustrial Revolution, one of the oldest Final Cut Pro plugin developers. It hosts a range of commercial and free plugins on the site. One free plugin was downloaded over a thousand times within 24 hours of release.

I also take on custom work, whether it is adapting an existing plugin for a special use or designing new plugins for clients from scratch. Having a good knowledge of editing allows me to build-in flexibility and more importantly, usability.

FCP.co

Now in its 10th year and 4th redesign, running FCP.co has given me knowledge on how to run a large CMS- you are currently reading my bio from the database! Although it sounds corny, I am pretty well up on social media trends & techniques, especially in the video sector. The recent Covid restrictions has enabled live FCP.co shows online. This involves managing a Zoom Webinar through Restream.io to YouTube and Facebook.

The Future

I'm always open to new ideas and opportunities, so please get in touch at editor (at) fcp.co. I've judged film competitions, presented workflow techniques to international audiences and come up with ideas for TV shows and software programs!
