Tracks from FCPX Roles in the new Logic Pro X update

There's some new functionality between the recent 10.0.7 update to Apple's Logic Pro X and Final Cut Pro X. Most interesting is the assignment of tracks from Roles.

Earlier in the week, Apple announced an update to 10.0.07 of its flagship music composition program Logic Pro X. We are not musicians, but we have to be impressed by the huge list of new features, stability improvements and bug fixes in the long support document. Many thanks to Forum member Leo Hans for the link.

The headline features promoted by Apple are: 

  • Now supports 24 processing threads on 12-core Mac Pro models
  • The current volume, pan, and send values for all selected tracks can now be inserted at the playhead position
  • Enabling Low Latency Mode no longer creates sync issues for Drummer, Ultrabeat, Native Instruments Machine and other plug-ins with integrated step sequencers
  • Automation can now be copied and pasted to any location using the Marquee tool
  • Adds an option for MIDI volume and pan data to control the instrument plug-in instead of the channel strip
  • Resolves several snap and alignment guide issues
  • Various fixes that improve XML import and export with Final Cut Pro X
  • Contains multiple enhancements to Accessibility

The listed new features in relation to FCPX are:

  • When Logic imports Final Cut Pro X XML, it now organizes audio tracks according to their assigned roles in Final Cut Pro.
  • Audio is now exported as 24-bit in projects exported to Final Cut Pro X XML.
  • When importing XML files that contain multiple projects from Final Cut Pro X 10.1 or later, Logic Pro X now offers a dialog to pick a specific project to import.

Tucked away down at the bottom of the list are the bug fixes that affect FCPX users:

  • When importing a Final Cut Pro X XML file that contains only audio, Logic Pro X now properly maintains the correct frame rate.
  • Pan automation in imported Final Cut Pro X XML projects again works as expected.
  • Logic no longer shows an error “One or more audio files have changed in length” when importing a Final Cut Pro X XML file where the start time is not zero.
  • Logic now properly maintains overlapped audio clips in imported Final Cut Pro X XML projects.

 

The organisation of 'audio tracks' according to Roles certainly sparked off testing on our Forum.

From Forum member Gabriel Spaulding:

'Well I just tested this on a simple project, and Logic Pro X does indeed organize by Roles, sort of. It takes a single Role and randomly splits it into different tracks, chooses to show only half of certain audio regions, and shows a video frame that does not play; double-clicking the video and manually dragging to preview shows a completely different part of the video than that which corresponds to the project exported from FCPX via XML. I wonder, could this be any less useful? I'll test on different projects now to be sure.'

Followed by:

'A subsequent test yielded slightly better results, though Logic continually asks if I want to convert to 23.98 as opposed to the project's native 25 --even though the project is already at 23.98. Importing the XML into FCPX from Logic, I find it ironic that it places all audio and video as connected clips, ignoring the magnetic timeline completely. As cool as Logic Pro X is, I hope we get some actual audio mixing tools directly inside of FCPX, because even though sharing XML files with another program is pretty straightforward, it is just another unnecessary, and somewhat messy, step in the process.'

It is no secret that we are pretty desperate for two new audio tools in FCPX, audio only crossfades and the ability to automate levels in realtime by moving a virtual slider. Will they arrive in FCPX? We hope so, but it is good to see more integration between FCPX and LPX for projects that have the time for audio sweetening.

Current Editing

great house giveaway 2020

2020 has been busy, the beginning of the year was finishing off a new property series (cut on FCP) for Channel 4 called The Great House Giveaway. I also designed and built the majority of the graphics as Motion templates. It has been a great success and the shows grabbed more viewers in the 4pm weekday slot than any previous strand. It has been recommissioned by C4 for 60 episodes, including prime-time versions and five themed programmes. The shows have also been nominated for a 2021 BAFTA.

Tour de france 2020
Although both were postponed to later in the year, I worked again on ITV's coverage of the Tour de France and La Vuelta. 2020 was my 25th year of editing the TdF and my 20th year as lead editor. The Tour was the first broadcast show to adopt FCPX working for multiple editors on shared storage.

 

BBC snooker the crucible

BBC's Snooker has played a big part in my life, I've been editing tournament coverage since 1997. I'm proud to be part of a very creative team that has pioneered many new ideas and workflows that are now industry standard in sports' production. This is currently an Adobe Premiere edit.

Covid cancelled some of the regular corporate events that I edit such as trade shows & events. I was lucky however to edit, from home, on projects for Amazon Kindle, Amazon Black Friday, Mastercard and very proud to have helped local charitable trust Kendall & Wall secure lottery funding.

As for software, my weapon of choice is Final Cut Pro and Motion, but I also have a good knowledge and broadcast credits with Adobe Premiere Pro, MOGRT design and Photoshop.

Plugin Design & Development

I'm the creative force behind Idustrial Revolution, one of the oldest Final Cut Pro plugin developers. It hosts a range of commercial and free plugins on the site. One free plugin was downloaded over a thousand times within 24 hours of release.

I also take on custom work, whether it is adapting an existing plugin for a special use or designing new plugins for clients from scratch. Having a good knowledge of editing allows me to build-in flexibility and more importantly, usability.

Now in its 10th year and 4th redesign, running FCP.co has given me knowledge on how to run a large CMS- you are currently reading my bio from the database! Although it sounds corny, I am pretty well up on social media trends & techniques, especially in the video sector. The recent Covid restrictions has enabled live FCP.co shows online. This involves managing a Zoom Webinar through Restream.io to YouTube and Facebook.
