WUTLUT - FCP grading tool with photoshop like controls 16 Apr 2016 22:27 #75463
Hi guys,
This might be a bit abstract but bare with me. The first thing I did in Motion 5 was develop an internal tool for myself to help ease the grading/cc process for s-log or any footage as I am not fond of the LUT process. Wasn't sure if it would actually move any units but ppl have started to buy it more and more so I think I'd like to put it out here for free (say 20 copies or so) just to get real feedback and a quick debate about LUT's vs your own LUT (errr finalized look based on traditional photoshop like tool sets vs utilities and single slider luts..). Here's an inforgraphic and vid (pardon the cussing) - and again while it's not officially a free plugin I'm going to honor 20-30 freebies for FCP members just post or PM me and I'll prep a download for you. If there are things you would add to this panel of tools to have more options please let me know. Many thanks in advance for any feedback I get on this. |

WutLut looking good, I tried myself to plublish some cc tools from Motion, but they're not in one plug like yours.
Super you included contrast/pivot i really like that tool. How would you go about dialing in an S-curve? |

Wow Norbz
This looks very interesting. You put this all together in Motion? Be interested in trying it out. Color grading/correction always takes lots of time and effort so any tool to get us there is wonderful. The other thing with LUTs is that there are lots of cameras that don't have the basic LUTs available. Assuming here you can save a preset the same as any in FCPX if you develop a "look" for a camera/scene, correct? Thanks, Norbz Happy Editing, Greg |

Brilliant as usual, but with a more professional touch. The topic is very current.your solution is very interesting to me. One question: You must use only Photoshop, or I can use other apps like "Affinity"?

@Joris:
Cheers, re the S-curve I do believe it's in the motion matrix so it's possible I think. I'll inspect and also have a few more ideas so a version 2 might be warranted soon ![]() @VidGreg Yep, if you watch the video you'll see me go through my photoshop sequence and I really wanted to mimick it for FCP as close as I could so this is what came of it ![]() @Pielle Thanks. Actually photoshop has nothing to do with this as far as the sequence goes, I just used it as a reference point as to what I usually do to grade stuff in it and wanted the controls to be similar to psd panels. Sent all if you a copy feel free to take it for a spin and let me know thoughts ![]() |

This looks Like a good idea, I've done something similar myself to be able to manipulate individual color channels in FCPX, but nothing close to this level of completeness and cohesiveness.
I don't have much experience with LUTs or Photoshop, but one thing that seems like it would be useful is the ability to define the tonal ranges and/or have more than 3, as that is one of the limitations I've run into with FCPX's built in grading tool. One of the benefits of curves, is that you can adjust any range of brightness, not just a pre-defined section. I don't know if that's something that could be achieved with motion, or not. I'd be glad to try it out and let you know what I thought, if you would like that. |

Ok, a couple things right off the bat.
1. You have a sharpen filter applied, but you haven't published any parameters. adjustable sharpening could be helpful because different cameras/settings require different levels of sharpening. 2. one thing I miss from photo editing is Temperature/Tint sliders for white balance, I'm not sure if something like that could be implemented or not. One other interesting thing that you probably wouldn't want as part of this filer, but maybe could be a separate effect, would be a stylized B&W effect using the channel mixer locked on monochrome as well as the other contrast, brightness, levels, etc... When I get a chance, I'll try it out with footage from a couple different cameras on different settings. |

Would love to try it out. I am new to all this. I have been picking things up here and there learning. This looks like something I would use often. If it isn't free still please provide a place to purchase it. Thanks.

<cough> … again, me playing the role of the bad cop, the grumpy guy here but…
This plugin is basically just publishing a handful of parameters available for CC in Motion… and Motion does it even better: because, as you can see: Motion has that little Histogram - exactly like Photoshop shows in Norbz' demo. Unfortunately, on Publishing this parameter, that handy Interface is gone… And you see eye-droppers in Motions interface… just click'n grab values… So, if you want to grade like in Photoshop, with similar tools, use Motion. Or, when you just want to 'filter' your clips, the Color-Board has many to offer (recommending the free 16 part tutorial at colorgradingcentral.com) 'Grading' by eye (what I do too for my hobby projects!) could be tricky, without using the Scopes. The Whites in Norbz' demo are 'flattened', reaching the ceiling, 120%, done, zero detail/texture. And some colour-adjustments posterise, because values go beyond… Grading without scopes is … dangerous. … and, finally, 'LUTs' are not 'Looks'… LUTs are three-dimensional, the parameters in use here are 2D… The word 'LUT' is meanwhile used and equated like 'Look', for those remembering analogue photography, kinda 'crossprocessing' … for a reason Norbz' expensive LUTtool is called 3DLUT..... ![]() so, … sorry for soothing the excitement… ![]() |

Karsten, you do have a way of bringing things back... into reality. "Grumpy old man" (perhaps...I am there, too) .
![]() And this is my way, of asking for a FREE copy, from NorBz. (Think it will work?) ![]() K. |

don't worry, most of the time I see a joke when it's in front of me - a Kraut with humour and self-irony… that is hard to swallow! Plus: hard to offence me - I AM old, handicapped, grumpy and very Deutsch… ![]() Have a look at Norbz Inspector-shot - you (esp. you) can rebuild it - except one thing: he has on top three rigs… which are not explained in the video (or I have missed it). I guess, that is the neckbraker ![]() |

Hey, I wouldn't go so hard on Norbz. He's built himself a tool that he can use, the way he wants to use it. I think that really shows the power of FCPX and Motion together, that you can build yourself almost anything an you can think of, using just Motion effects. Anyone know of another editing system where you can do that?

apologizes to Norbz, if my post came over too offensive … !! Nice job, no doubt, … … and as plugin maker, I praise the integration of M5 + FCPX every day, don't worry ![]() |

Daaaaamn homey~!
How many times can you fuk up my name and insult my tool in one thread? LOL. I don't know what to say so I'll say less vs more. The tool does what it's supposed to do, is far from expensive as you said (have you SEEN LUT websites and prices?!), and is useful/valuable to me and others who use it. I don't really know why you just went all out on this stopping sales and all - I thought we were cools. (and yes I'm joking, I don't get offended easily but you did kinda go left on me broooo!) EDIT: I didn't notice a lot of people above still trying to get it free - so I'm going to do something nice. For the next 48hrs I'm going to give it away free. Go get it here: brandingtemplates.com/downloads/wutlut-f...-photoshop-controls/ |
