Apple post how to import Sony XDCAM media into FCPX

Apple have released a Knowledge Base article on how to import XDCAM footage into FCPX. Hang on a minute though, this isn't new news is it? Or are we missing something here?

We had a good look through all the supported formats in FCPX when it was released and XDCAM was in there. It later came to light that you had to use the Sony XDCAM Transfer tool first to get your clips on your system before bringing them into FCPX

Maybe it is because there might have been some complaints but it seems slightly odd that Apple have published this article now. Anyway here's the Apple Knowledge Base article.

Summary

To be able to import Sony XDCAM, XDCAM HD and XDCAM EX media into Final Cut Pro X, you'll need to download and install the Sony XDCAM Transfer software and XDCAM Drive software.

Products Affected

Final Cut Pro X

  1. Choose Software Update from the Apple () menu after installing Final Cut Pro X to install Pro Apps QuickTime codecs.
  2. Visit www.sony.com/xdcam-downloads and download "PDW-U1 XDCAM Drive (SD/HD)".
  3. Then visit www.sony.com/xdcam-software and download "XDCAM Transfer for Apple Final Cut Pro".
  4. Install both applications.
  5. Open XDCAM Transfer in the Applications folder.
  6. Choose File > Add Source.
  7. Navigate to the material you would like to import and click Import.
  8. By default, the XDCAM Media will be copied to the ~/Movies folder into a folder called "Sony XDCAM Transfer."
  9. In Final Cut Pro X:
    • Choose File > Import > Files.
    • Navigate to the Sony XDCAM Transfer folder in the ~/Movies folder and choose File > Import > Files to import the media.
